Did you know?... that our first WEE MINDS group was set up safely with adherence to Government guidelines, and with much planning and preparation during Covid with just 2 babies and their parents? Utilising the large room space, and with perspex screens, individual play space for each baby and their parent and individual sanitised play kit for each child, and under the Supervision of the qualified Therapist - babies born in to a new world of masks and social isolation were gently and safely able to hear and see other each other as they acquired facial recognition and representation. Parents were able to see another parent and the therapist- helping to reduce loneliness and isolation in the critical early post natal weeks.
From a safe distance in the room the therapist demonstrated story massage techniques as parents mirrored the movements with their baby who experienced touch, sound, and sensory stimulation appropriate to age and stage of development.
WEE MINDS was a unique concept and the first of its kind in Inverclyde during this time.
As Government restrictions were lifted WEE MINDS gradually increased to 4 groups per week with 36 babies attending and we were delighted to receive grant funding from Cattanach that allowed WEE MINDS infant and parent attachment groups to grow and develop.
This unique group with a focus on early infant attachment soon came to the attention of Professor Yvonne Kuipers Head of Midwifery at Edinburgh Napier University and over a period of 3 months visiting with us in person at our base in Ladyburn- some volunteer parents and Grandparents and staff (where experiences were applicable) took part in a study of birth trauma over a period of face to face and group interview that Professor Kuipers later presented the findings of on a wider national platform while maintaining strict confidentiality and anonymity for participating parents.
Today we look forward with great interest and excitement as our children from that very first cohort of covid babies are preparing to start school in the summer and we are privileged to have walked alongside them from the start of their journey
